EN 13034 Certified Protective Clothing
EN 13034 chemical protective clothing is designed to provide limited protection against splashes, sprays, and splatters of liquid chemicals. This type of personal protective equipment (PPE) is suitable for situations where the risk of exposure is low to moderate, and when a complete barrier against liquids is not required.
What is the EN 13034 standard?
The EN 13034 standard applies to workwear used in the chemical industry, pharmaceuticals, surface treatment, food processing, industrial cleaning, and maintenance. This standard covers the lowest level of chemical protection (Type 6), but is essential for daily safety against minor risks.Clothing compliant with EN 13034 is certified to resist certain chemicals commonly found in industrial environments.
Two EN 13034 sub-classifications
-
Type 6: Full body protective clothing (e.g., chemical safety coverall, inseparable jacket and trousers set).
Ideal for operations requiring overall protection against accidental splashes. -
PB 6 (Partial Body): Garment protecting part of the body (separable jacket or trousers, apron, sleeves).
Useful for tasks where only certain limbs are exposed.
Which chemicals are tested?
To ensure their effectiveness, EN 13034 garments are tested on 4 common chemicals to measure their repellency index and their penetration index :
- 30% sulfuric acid
- 10% sodium hydroxide (caustic soda)
- Butanol-1 (alcohol)
- O-Xylene (hydrocarbon)
These tests make it possible to classify garments according to their ability to repel chemical liquids and to prevent their penetration into the fabric.

Important notes :
Advantages and limitations of the EN 13034 standard
- Light chemical protection for laboratory work, industrial maintenance, agriculture, painting, or handling low-concentration chemicals.
- Comfort and freedom of movement superior to that of impermeable coveralls.
- Maintenance requirement: proper care extends the performance of the barrier treatment.
- Limitation: not suitable for protection against solid chemicals, large volumes of liquids, or highly hazardous environments.
Selection advice for your PPE EN 13034
- Always choose the appropriate type (Type 6 or PB 6) according to the intensity and area of exposure.
- Check the performance class based on the products handled.
- Follow the washing and re-impregnation instructions to ensure the compliance of the chemical barrier.
- Complete with gloves, goggles, masks, or overshoes according to the recommendations of the chemical risk assessment.
